Being in the Fintech space, I try to find books on the big personalities in the industry to read and learn from their experience in the industry. And who is not bigger in the banking world in recent decades than Jamie Dimon, the CEO of JP Morgan Chase.
This book chronicles his life’s rollercoaster journey up to 2010. This includes his initial start at American Express, partnership with Sandy Weill to piece together and build Citigroup and subsequent firing, his ascension to the CEO of JP Morgan Chase and the outsized role he played during the 2008 Financial Crisis. Through it all, we learn about his characteristics and leadership style that allow his to progress.
What are his leadership styles?
- Fair in his treatment of his employees
- Fundamental-led. Fortress Balance Sheet. He preaches cost control and getting your house in order so when the time comes, he can use his strong position to profit from others’ mistakes
- Hard working, cascading down to his team
- Straight talking, no politics, no corporate intrigue
- Accountable. Took responsibility when he didn’t have to
- Debate-driven decision making. Analytical rigor
- Cultivate loyal inner circle. Unlike other banks, his lieutenants stay with him, providing stability
I enjoy learning more about this financial titan. I worked for Citigroup but never really knew how it came to be through the wizardry of both Weill and Dimon. As far as banks go, his is the most well-run and a bit part of the credit must go to his steady leadership over time.
