Book Review: TRADING IN THE ZONE

What does it take to be an amazing operator?

Many people long for independence and freedom. Trading can offer an attractive money-making choice that you can do anytime anywhere. However, many people really are not as good a trader as they think and lose a lot of money as a result. This book shares the mindset and discipline required to become a consistently good trader.

The author is a trader who converted himself into a guru to help other traders so he has a lot of experience and contemplation to share. Even for someone who doesn’t want to go into trading like myself, there are a lot of interesting lessons and thoughts that are quite applicable to any work and project I do. What are some of those lessons?

  1. The good mindset is to believe that 1). you don’t need to know everything; 2). anything can happen and 3). every moment is unique
  2. Good trading is about understanding and understanding of self. You need to understand their triggers and flaws (e.g. What you think you were deprived as a childhood can become addiction later on). With self-awareness, you can begin the journey to change their attitude.
  3. There is a balance a trader needs to find. Be carefree (act without fear) but not reckless. Be rigid in our rules (don’t let emotion take you off your gameplan) but flexible in our expectations (know that you can win or lose in a given hand)
  4. The goal is to be consistent. One should have a thesis/an edge and stick with it until proven otherwise. Ignore a given trade/situation and focus on the overall long-term. Think a casino. They don’t care about a given hand because they know over the long term, the house holds the edge and will always win.
  5. You need to learn to have no fear of making mistakes. Need freedom to express and learn
  6. Our perception filters out what we don’t know/expect. Need to train to see the uniqueness
  7. Beliefs need energy to fuel. For bad beliefs, aim to deactivate and deny their energy, not destroyed

The book has quite a bit of trading jargons but it’s still well worth reading to unlock the insight into mastering your mind to be a better operator.
