Simu Liu is famous for being the first Asian Marvel superhero, Shang Chi. This is his autobiography from his childhood to the moment he got his fateful Marvel call.
What makes this extra-relatable is the Asian ancestry, culture and tradition that permeated his life growing up. Those things are so universal.
Simu grew up in a relatively well-off family but with caretakers who were not emotionally matured to raised a kid. Some extra caretaking reminders I’ll take from this story are:
- Love your child unconditionally. Don’t give love only when they please you. Else they will try to find that love and intimacy somewhere else
- Even if you think you provide everything physically, be mindful of their mental need
- Teach consistent rules and principles.
- Don’t be self-centered. Show respect to your child as an individual
- Live your value because your child will see and copy them
- Let your child know its ok to fail. Fear of failure can cause big insecurity for them growing up
Simu also talks a lot about the value of hard work, discipline, representation to inspire and self-compassion. He read his own audiobook and you can really feel the emotions in different story beats. A fun read with lots of good messages for anyone wanting to feel inspired, dream big and achieve it!
